Professional cleaning of Super 8 films during projection
Even if Super 8 films have been stored optimally, dust particles and light soiling, which dulls the pleasure of filming and makes digitization obstruct. Even if some of them can only be achieved with a wet cleaning dry cleaning is sufficient for most films.
But hardly anyone takes the trouble to clean the films before projection - even in digitization, this would drive up costs significantly. That is how the idea came about, to clean the films "inline" during projection
The result: The Film-Retter® film cleaner
Over the years, we have digitized many, many meters of narrow film and have Methods of dry cleaning improved continuously.
How the film cleaner works:
- Static discharge
A Super 8 film is loaded while unrolling statically on. This static charge attracts unwanted dust particles. Therefore the film passes through a grounded, electrically conductive double brush, which removes the film discharges - so the dust particles lose the liability. By using antistatic brushes for records is ensures that the emulsion of the Super 8 films during cleaning none damage.
- Pneumatic film cleaning
In the next step the film happens a small high pressure fan. Normally an air stream would not be strong enough to remove dust particles from the film solve. Only by the previous static Discharge is the adhesive force of
dust particles are reduced so that these can now be easily blown down.
- Mechanical film cleaning
In the last step remove fur rolls gently removes the last, stubborn dirt particles from the film. The device is
constructed in such a way that the fur rolls driven by the film transport and opposite of the film transport direction.
So during the short contact path an optimal cleaning effect achieved.
The philosophy behind the project
In order to make the production of the film cleaner as simple as possible we have, wherever possible, relied on standard components is fallen back on.
For example, the foot and frame of the Cleaner made from parts of a metal construction kit. The static We have discharged with commercially available antistatic brushes for vinyl records. Also the fan is a Standard product, whereby we have chosen a variant, without power supply unit directly operated at 220V AC voltage
can be made.
We have only had a few individual parts produced in 3D printing. The corresponding model data can be found in the package of construction plans, which you can download free of charge.
Open Source Hardware - what is that?
"Open Source" is so far mostly known from software and means of a program can be published, so that everyone can look into it, make improvements and the improved product can be further distributed.
For the benefit of all. With the proliferation of 3D printers, the open source idea has also extended to components and devices conquered. Anyone can print a product, refine the design and again.
We Film-Retter® have decided to make the Film Cleaner available as Open Source Hardware because we are sure that other film fans with their experience will still be able to enjoy can contribute further ideas to further develop the machine.
